Wild downtown Portland chase ends with 2 arrests, 4 vehicles damaged

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A downtown Portland chase with a wrong-way motorist, at one point on a sidewalk, ended with the arrest of the driver and passenger, according to Portland police.
The incident began about 1:30 p.m. Monday when police were dispatched to a report of a drunken driver sitting in a car at West 20th Avenue and West Burnside Street.
An officer tried to contact the driver, who fled east, ramming a police car. He drove a short distance on a sidewalk. A second officer chased the car for two blocks, calling off the pursuit in the interest of safety, as the driver's actions were very erratic, police said.
Police then monitored the vehicle's travel. The driver reached Southwest 4th Avenue, where he went the wrong way and struck another car. He turned east on Jefferson before crashing near Southwest 3rd Avenue.
The driver was detained by a citizen until officers arrived, police said.
